It's about Encouraging Entrepreneurs

The Rhode Island Business Competition aims to foster development of growth companies in Rhode Island.

Rhode Island’s modern entrepreneurial history began in 1790 when Samuel Slater brought cotton spinning machinery to Pawtucket with financial backing from a Providence businessman. The Rhode Island Business Competition continues that tradition by providing capital and services from organizations across the state to help new companies build their future in Rhode Island.

Supported by a consortium of private businesses, professional firms, banks and investors, colleges and universities, nonprofit organizations, service organizations, and public agencies, the Rhode Island Business Competition is unique within the Northeast.

New and emerging entrepreneurs participate by competing in the Rhode Island Business Competition. It's simple.

  1. Pitch a plan to create or expand a growing business in Rhode Island.
  2. The most promising ideas will receive cash and services.

Since 2001, we have awarded prizes valued at $2.9 million to competitors who are building companies addressing opportunities in agriculture, biotechnology, construction, education, food and drink, green technology, health, insurance, internet, medical technology, music, retailing, and software, among other areas.

Today, more than 50 former participants are operating businesses that employ hundreds of Rhode Islanders and buy goods and services from Rhode Island companies.
